Since the early 60’s Bariw had already a complete elementary school. After graduation, most of the students either went to Marcial O. Ranola Memorial School, Guinobatan Albay and St. John’s Academy at Camalig for their secondary education which is very costly on the part of the poor people of the barangay who are willing to send their children to school.
The depressing situation moved the barrio folks to talk about the possibility of putting the barangay high school. So, they sought the advice of the school authorities. The school administration headed by Mr. Jose O. Marfil who was then the principal of Bariw Elementary School, the parents and the barangay Captain Mr. Alfredo Moises, devised a plan to establish a barangay high school in the locality. The plan was presented in a general PTA Meeting sometime in January 1979. The parents were all amenable to proposal and those graduating children pledged not to send them to other institutions in order to open the first high school in Bariw.
During the meeting, Kagawad Apolinario Cantillana, Municipal District Councilor was invited. He expressed his full support and commitment to the plan and promised that he would personally sponsor a resolution regarding their plan to be submitted to the municipal council and that he, (Mr. Cantillana) be given a copy for his reference. The resolution should be given or submitted to school authorities of Department of Education Culture and Sports in Albay seeking permission for opening a barangay high school.
All the necessary supporting papers were immediately prepared and submitted to the authorities concerned. The principal, Mr. Jose O. Marfil, the barangay captain Mr. Alfredo Moises concurrently the PTA president and Kagawad Apolinario Cantillana joined hands in following up these papers for an expeditious action. Luckily, they did not encounter any dissenting opinion from the higher authorities finally the first year high school was opened during the school year 1980 – 1981 as an extension of Marcial O. Ranola High School(MORMS), Guinobatan Albay with sixty two (62) students, thirty four (34) male and twenty eight (28) female under Ms. Herminia Nipa as their pioneer teacher. During this time, the school has no building yet of its own so the students were temporarily housed in the unoccupied rooms of Bariw Elementary School.
As the year went by, enrolment increased and the elementary school grounds became too small for the fast-growing high school. Thus, in 1983 the PTA unanimously decided to look for a suitable site for the high school. Luckily, the lot adjoining school grounds was being subdivided. Hence, the PTA passed a resolution regarding the purchase of lot. It was stated in the resolution that each parent and teacher would contribute the amount of P10.00 every year until the school raised the needed funds. This was sanctioned by the barangay council and the different barangay captains of the nearby barangay serviced by the school namely Palanog, Tagaytay, Miti, LIbod, Baligang and Bantonan.
This has been surveyed and registered in the registry of deeds where the first academic building now stands including the Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA) Building which was constructed in 1990. An additional lot adjustment to the first one was again purchased out of the savings from the tuition fees (local funds) comprising now the almost 1-hectare school site with lifelong structures.
The first commencement exercise was in 1984. It was a very significant event to the barangay for it was a concrete proof that the school has attained its objective of providing secondary education to the rural youth.
Since then, Bariw National High School contributed a lot in inculcating in the minds of the people that education is really a vehicle in changing the life of the individual and effecting progress in the community.
At present the school has forty-eight (48) permanent personnel with forty-two (42) teachers, one (1) Disbursing officer II, one (1) Senior bookkeeper, one (1) Administrative Assistant II (JHS), one (1) Administrative assistant II (SHS) and a Principal. To help in the delivery of quality services, one (1) Administrative Aide and one (1) Watchman and two (2) Utility workers on Contract of Services.
